Why cloths decide your cleaning result, not your detergent

Ask any cleaning professional where a job went wrong and the answer is rarely the chemical. It is the cloth. A microfibre cloth ranks in the middle of a van's cost list and at the top of the list of things that ruin a result: the wrong material scratches a surface, the wrong fold smears a film across it, and a cloth that has been sitting damp in a bucket undoes an hour of work in one pass.

This guide is written for the buyer and for the operator who has to use what the buyer chose. It covers what each material actually does, how to fold and use a cloth so that you finish with clean faces rather than a spread film, how to colour-code by area, how to wash cloths so they last, and what to demand from a supplier before you commit to a full box.

First, identify the material you are holding

Three families cover almost everything sold for professional cleaning, and they behave in completely different ways. Buying by colour or by habit is how a van ends up full of cloths that only work on one surface.

Microfibre

Split microfibre is a synthetic fibre, usually polyester blended with polyamide, woven into fibres many times finer than a human hair. It does not clean by abrasion; it cleans by mechanical capture and capillary action. The fine fibres lift and trap dust, grease and bacteria instead of pushing them around. It works wet or dry, needs very little water and little or no detergent, and leaves glass and stainless steel without streaks when it is clean.

Its limits matter just as much. It cannot absorb large volumes of spilled liquid quickly, it loses capture capacity as it loads with dirt, and a greasy or worn cloth simply redistributes grease. It is also the material most frequently ruined by fabric softener, which coats the fibre and kills its static and capillary behaviour.

Cellulose and viscose sponges

Cellulose is plant fibre, highly absorbent and cheap. Viscose sponges (the flat, hard cloths that soften in water) hold a great deal of water and release it under pressure. Both are excellent for volume of liquid and for washing down large areas, tables, worktops and wet rooms. What they do not do is capture fine dust or leave a streak-free finish, and they degrade faster than microfibre under repeated washing. They are consumables, and they should be budgeted as consumables.

PVA and hybrid PU-PVA cloths

PVA (polyvinyl alcohol) cloths are dense and low-linting, and they are the reference material where a surface must finish without fibres or streaks: screens, glass, polished stainless steel, instrument panels and delivery vans. A hybrid cloth such as the PU-PVA MICRO cloth from Puritte combines microfibre with PVA so that one item both absorbs well and finishes cleanly. That hybrid behaviour is what makes it useful across glass, wood, stainless steel, ceramic and plastic without changing tool between areas, at the price of needing proper rinsing and drying after use.

The comparison that matters to a professional buyer is not which cloth is best, it is which material finishes each surface with the fewest passes. Fewer passes means less labour, and labour is the largest line in any cleaning budget.

Choosing by surface, not by habit

Map the material to the surface before you buy a whole box of anything.

  • Glass, mirrors and screens: PU-PVA or low-lint microfibre, one cloth wet and one dry, used in a sequence. Never cellulose: it sheds fibres and leaves a film.
  • Stainless steel and brushed metal: clean microfibre, damp then dry, working with the grain. Change the face of the cloth as soon as it starts to smear.
  • Wood and laminate: a well-wrung microfibre, never soaking. Standing water is what raises grain and lifts edges.
  • Ceramic and porcelain tile: microfibre or cellulose for washing, then a dry microfibre to remove the residue film.
  • Worktops in food areas: colour-coded microfibre with the appropriate food-safe detergent for the surface, one cloth per zone, washed after every shift.
  • High-volume spills and wet rooms: cellulose or viscose sponge first to take the volume, microfibre second to finish.
  • Dusting before washing: dry microfibre, because dust plus water is the plaster that creates streaks on glass.

How to fold and use a microfibre cloth properly

This is the single most ignored part of professional cleaning and the one that decides how long one cloth lasts and how many passes a surface needs. A cloth used open is a cloth with one working face; a cloth folded is a cloth with eight.

  1. Fold in half, then in half again. You now hold eight clean faces in one hand. Use one face until it is soiled, then rotate to the next.
  2. Work top to bottom and clean to dirty. Start at the highest point and the cleanest edge of the surface and move towards you. Working upwards returns dirty water onto areas you have already finished.
  3. Use a defined motion, not circles. Overlapping straight passes on the working face, turning the cloth at the ends. Circles leave swirl marks on glass and steel.
  4. Wet the cloth, not the surface, for detergent work. Spraying the cloth and then folding it distributes the product evenly and avoids overspray onto adjacent surfaces.
  5. Finish with a dry cloth. The final pass on glass, steel and screens should always be a clean, dry cloth. Skipping it is what leaves the film the customer sees.
  6. Rotate and replace before the cloth is saturated. A cloth that is full of soil does not clean; it redistributes. Changing face takes two seconds, redoing the surface takes ten minutes.

Colour coding: the control that survives an inspection

Cross-contamination is the failure that a cleaning audit actually looks for. The standard and defensible scheme is one colour per zone, applied consistently across cloths, mops and buckets:

  • Red for sanitary areas and toilets, including the immediate surroundings.
  • Blue for general and front-of-house areas: offices, corridors, dining rooms, customer-facing spaces.
  • Green for kitchens and food preparation and handling areas.
  • Yellow for clinical and care areas, and for other high-risk surfaces.

Two rules make the scheme real rather than decorative. First, a colour is not a colour unless it applies to every tool used in that area, including buckets. Second, cloths must not be washed together across colours at the end of the shift, because that is precisely where the scheme is undone.

Washing and storing so a cloth lasts

Microfibre is a durable product, but it is easily killed by small mistakes. Wash it between 40 and 60 °C depending on how soiled it is and what the manufacturer states, with a neutral detergent. Never use fabric softener: it coats the fibre and destroys the static charge and capillary action that make microfibre work. Never use bleach on microfibre if you want it to keep its colour and structure. Wash cloths separately from heavily soiled cotton or from oily workshop items, dry them fully, and store them dry in a ventilated place. A cloth put away damp comes back smelling of mildew and spreads bacteria on the first pass of the next shift.

Realistic service life: coloured microfibre cloths in daily professional use last a few months, cellulose and viscose sponges are consumables measured in weeks, and PU-PVA cloths hold up well if they are rinsed clean and not left crumpled wet. Budget replacement by usage, not by price per unit, because the cheapest cloth that has to be thrown away twice as often is the most expensive one in the van.

Cross-contamination, chemicals and the two-minute habit

Do not mix cloths between the toilet area and food-contact surfaces, at any point, without washing in between. When a cloth has touched disinfectant, rinse it or set it aside for washing before it goes near glass or steel, because dried chemical residue is what leaves the haze on stainless steel. Keep the cloth used for the spill separate from the cloth used to finish, and keep the dry finishing cloth folded and stored away from the wet ones. These are not refinements; they are the difference between a result that passes an audit and one that has to be redone the same day.

Running the numbers: where the money actually goes

Price per cloth is the least useful figure in the decision. The cost that matters is the cost per square metre cleaned, and it is built from four lines: the purchase price spread across the cloth's real service life, the number of passes the material needs on that surface, the quantity of detergent the material requires, and the labour minutes per square metre. A cloth that finishes glass in one pass instead of three pays for itself in the first week, whatever it costs at the checkout. A cloth that has to be thrown away every two weeks loses on that last line regardless of its unit price.

What to demand from a supplier before you buy a full box

  1. Fibre composition. The polyester and polyamide proportions in a microfibre cloth, stated in writing. This is what tells you whether it captures or just pushes.
  2. Weight in grams per square metre and the weave. This is what tells you whether it will last a few months or a few weeks in daily professional use.
  3. Max washing temperature and dryer tolerance. If the supplier cannot state it, the cloth has no defined service life.
  4. Colour range and colour discrimination. Whether a reliable colour scheme can actually be built across cloths, mops and buckets from the same supplier.
  5. Availability in packs and by the box, at consistent quality. A cleaning operation needs to rebuy the same item in six months, not a lookalike.
  6. Documentation for food areas. Whether the cloth is suitable for food-contact surfaces and what cleaning it requires afterwards.

Frequently asked questions

Can I use microfibre cloths with any chemical product?

With most neutral and alkaline detergents, yes, at the recommended dilution. Avoid fabric softener at all times and be careful with aggressive solvents and chlorine-based products, which degrade the fibre and shorten its service life.

Do microfibre cloths work with just water?

For glass, dust, light grease and everyday maintenance, yes. Microfibre does most of its work mechanically. Heavier grease and disinfection require the appropriate product as well.

Why does my stainless steel keep leaving a haze?

Almost always because the finishing cloth is damp or has dried chemical residue in it. Finish with a clean, dry cloth and work with the grain.

How often should cloths be washed in a professional setting?

At the end of every shift, and immediately after any cloth has been used on sanitary areas or food-contact surfaces. Colour-coded cloths in different colours should not be washed together.

Are cellulose and viscose sponges a replacement for microfibre?
