Preventive Measures with Cleaning Products: Transfers, Labeling and Safety Data Sheets

In the Professional field, the use of cleaning products implies the Chemical Handling which, if not handled correctly, can pose significant risks to the health and safety of workers. From burns and poisoning to fires, accidents can occur due to ignorance or the absence of adequate preventive measures.

In this article, we'll explore the essential steps to ensure safe handling of chemicals, focusing on Three pillars Fundamental: the correct transfer of substances, labelling in accordance with current regulations and the correct management of Safety Data Sheets (SDS). These practices not only comply with regulations in Spain and the European Union, but also protect employees and improve operational efficiency in professional cleaning environments.

Find out how to implement these measures in your business to ensure a safe and responsible environment.

Preventive Measures with Cleaning Products: Transfers, Labeling and Safety Data Sheets
Compartir:

The proper use of chemical products in professional cleaning requires following preventive measures that guarantee the safety of workers and compliance with current regulations. This article details the essential practices for the safe handling of chemical products, from transfer operations to labelling and the correct use of Safety Data Sheets (SDS), in accordance with the legislation of Spain and the European Union.

1. The Transfer of Chemical Substances

The transfer of chemicals, especially dangerous, is a critical operation where accidents such as burns, poisoning or fires can occur. According to the regulations on the prevention of occupational risks (Law 31/1995) and Regulation (EU) 1907/2006 (REACH), it is essential to implement preventive measures to minimise risks.

Recommendations for Safe Transfer:

  1. Access to the Safety Data Sheet (SDS):
Always have the SDS of the product to be handled handy. This document provides essential information on measures in the event of spills, poisonings and accidental contacts.

  2. Adequate Spaces:
Transfer in ventilated areas, with localized extraction systems. If handling flammable or toxic substances, use specific areas with spill control and minimize manual operations.

  3. Use of Appropriate Equipment:

    • Use funnels, regulator taps, or mechanical pumping systems to prevent spillage.
    • For medium-sized containers (10-20 liters), use mechanical tilting systems with tap.
  4. Spill Prevention:

    • Use specific neutralizing substances to clean up spills. Never absorb flammable liquids with sawdust or other combustible materials.
    • Always have plenty of water available for cleaning up accidental spills.
  5. Personal Protection:

    • Wear chemical-resistant gloves and face shields to prevent splashing, especially with corrosive substances.
    • Transfer at controlled speeds to avoid the build-up of electrostatic charges, which can act as a source of ignition.
  6. Additional Precautions:

    • When transferring flammable liquids, use inerting systems (e.g. nitrogen) to avoid hazardous atmospheres.
    • Close containers immediately after removing the necessary product.

2. Chemical Packaging and Labeling

The labelling of chemical substances is regulated in the European Union by Regulation (EC) No. 1272/2008 (CLP Regulation). This establishes the requirements to guarantee a correct identification and prevention of risks.

Basic Labeling Requirements:

  1. Required Information:

    • Trade name of the product or mixture.
    • Identity of hazardous substances.
    • Name, address, and phone number of the provider.
    • Nominal quantity of the product in the container.
  2. Hazard Pictograms:
The pictograms must meet the minimum dimensions according to the size of the container and occupy at least 1/15 of the area of the label. Each pictogram must be clearly visible and easily identifiable.

  3. Words of Warning:
Depending on the level of danger, use terms such as "Danger" or "Attention."

  4. Precautionary Advice:
Include up to six phrases that indicate specific precautions. For example: "Keep out of reach of children" or "In case of contact with eyes, rinse with plenty of water".

  5. Supplemental Information:
If the packaging is secondary or reused, it can omit certain elements such as the name of the supplier, but it must maintain the necessary pictograms and warnings to ensure safety.

3. Safety Data Sheets (SDS)

SDSs are mandatory under the REACH Regulation for any chemical classified as hazardous. These sheets must be available for consultation at all times and comply with the requirements of Annex II of Regulation (EU) No. 2020/878.

Management of SDS in the Company:

  1. Registration and Update:
Keep an up-to-date record of all SDSs of chemicals used in the company. Request SDS from suppliers before first delivery.

  2. Risk Assessment:
Use the information contained in the SDS to assess the risks associated with each product in the workplace.

  3. Training and Consultation:

    • Train workers on the content of the SDS and the preventive measures they need to take.
    • Ensure SDSs are available to company employees and medical services.
  4. Preventive Actions:
Based on the SDS, implement measures such as:

    • Substitution of dangerous products with less harmful ones.
    • Adaptation of storage and handling conditions.
    • Preparation of emergency protocols.
